Holiday Planning Starts With Mid-July Shopping Data

As a journalist who still marks up media plans by hand, I keep returning to one point — Clean Shopping Intelligence data arrives late August — right as Q4 allocations lock.

I am less interested in keynote poetry than in the levers a brand can actually toggle before Friday’s budget meeting.

  1. Define the conversion before you scale
  2. Separate brand safety from performance tests
  3. Compare incrementality, not vanity CTR

Pros

  • Clearer conversion levers appearing
  • Fresh inventory worth small tests
  • Creative still decides efficiency

Cons

  • Attribution remains murky
  • Learning periods burn budget
  • Default AI edits can dilute brand

In practice, I ask teams to write the refusal list first: which automated edits are unacceptable, which placements are off-limits, and which metrics will kill the test. Without that list, every platform “enhancement” becomes a quiet rewrite of the brief.
