Custom Type Still Signals Care in a Template Era

As a journalist who still marks up media plans by hand, I keep returning to one point — A custom font tied the Apple TV system together — type remains strategy.

For context, see Wikipedia: Typography.

I am less interested in keynote poetry than in the levers a brand can actually toggle before Friday’s budget meeting.

  • Document process early
  • Test recognition, not just aesthetics
  • Reserve budget for real materials
Signal Detail
Project Why it mattered
Apple TV Rebrand Design Grand Prix
WWDC iOS 27 Everyday UI expectations
Entry volume Fewer entries, higher prestige

Pros

  • Craft visibility builds trust
  • Clear naming fixes discovery
  • Sonic identity deepens recall

Cons

  • Physical production costs more
  • Making-of requires planning
  • Global systems risk rigidity

None of this means the tools are useless. It means the craft job moved upstream. The people who win this cycle will brief better, version obsessively, and treat platform defaults as suggestions rather than destiny.

If you only remember one habit from this piece, make it this: screenshot the served creative, not just the uploaded master. What ran is the truth; what you approved in the deck is often a polite fiction.
